Wall Lake Revisited

A few more details on the Wall Lake hike. This is a must do while in Waterton. Easy enough for grade school kids. We saw babies in backpacks, a jogging stroller, and mountain bikes. It is enough so that you can say that you have hiked, but with minor elevation changes it is a big bang for the effort. When you hike out you have a choice of bearing off to Forum lake that is shorter, or doing 1km more hiking with less up and down. We choose the longer, flatter hike.

We did not realize that we would be leaving Alberta and going into British Columbia, but as the trail climbed into Akimina Pass, we did.  A cool surprise.

The lake itself is phenominal. A emerald green gem. It is impossible to describe the breathtaking expanse of sheer wall that gives the lake its name. You round the corner and there it is a wall of rock over 1000 feet high. Snow fields still at the end in August, and clear, then blue, then deep emerald green water.

We did do the wade out and dunk routine. Cold but not too bad. Our last days in Waterton were all 90F with a dry wind blowing. So a quick dip was refreshing.

Give Marsha all the credit for spotting the goats, all three. Closer than the last set we saw, it was fun to sit and dry our clothes and watch. For fish, it was similar to Goat Lake. Lots and lots of 3-5 inch trout near the shore rolling lazily up to the surface. You could stand there knee deep and watch them. Alas, no rod, no National Park license (and if I had it, I was 1km in BC and would need a BC license).

It was a spectacular hike.
